Federal judge refuses to block ordinance on strip clubs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis U.S. District Judge Bernice Donald has denied an injunction preventing enforcement of a new Shelby County ordinance to rein in dancers at topless clubs.

Donald's order issued Wednesday states the clubs failed to show evidence they would likely succeed in their lawsuit against the county.

The new statute would ban the sale of alcohol in clubs where topless dancers appear, require the dancers wear pasties and mandate six feet of space between dancers and customers or other dancers.

It is scheduled to take effect May 1.

The lawsuit was filed in January by seven clubs, all within Memphis city limits. No trial date has been set.
