Right now, it's an alarming time to be a taxpayer in Shelby County or the City of Memphis, or a parent with a child in the Memphis City School system. Let's start with Memphis Mayor Dr. Willie Herenton, who's so busy cooking up a plan to raise city taxes by 17% that he forgets to pay his own taxes on time.

Then, there’s the talk that the city doesn't need any tax hike. The city will just withhold the money that it's been sending to Memphis City Schools, a practice that apparently began in 1939.

Then, the Mayor, who does or does not want to be the school superintendent, is on the verge of unveiling a plan to cure what ails the city school system.

And finally, there’s the search committee that's looking for the "real" superintendent.  Don't you know that the best educators in the nation are lining to apply for this opportunity?

Folks, this is a mess. The people involved in all of these decisions should behave transparently, ask for and spend our tax dollars wisely, and have the best interests of our school children at heart. I'm not holding my breath.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
