Man arrested in beating and robbery of 87-year-old woman

Memphis police arrested Alex House Friday in connection with the beating and robbery of 87-year-old Ceneta Qualls. House is charged with especially aggravated robbery, especially aggravated burglary, and criminal attempt felony.

House's elderly victim, whom police said was nearly beaten to death, has been upgraded from critical to good condition.

Qualls lives alone above her family business, the S.W. Qualls funeral home located at 479 Vance. Employees arrived for work Thursday morning to find the funeral home's main door was still locked.

"Generally she's down here early in the mornings to open up and start the day," said Jesse Parks, Ceneta Quall's nephew.

Parks discovered his aunt beaten and bleeding in her bedroom early Thursday.

A constant flow of friends stopped by the funeral home Friday to check on Quall's progress.

"You know it makes no sense, she was a staple in the community, you know, we just shouldn't have these things," Parks said.

Relatives said Ceneta Qualls is a strong person and they believe she will recover.

"She's alive, so the family's very blessed that she's alive and I think she'll come back around," said Parks.

Parks said he believes this incident is symptomatic of the crime problem that's plaguing not only Memphis, but the entire nation.

"It's gotten out of hand, you know, it's out of hand now it's out of control," said Parks. "The problem is bigger than just that one person. It's a problem that's existing in this city, that's existing in the state, that's existing in this country."
