Elderly couple escapes burning house thanks to teenage hero

An elderly Memphis couple escaped a house fire Saturday afternoon thanks to a young neighbor whom they say is their hero.

76-year-old Marilyn Wilson and her 80-year-old husband were inside their home when the fire started around 4pm, but were unaware that their house was in flames.

14-year-old Raven Hill, who lives across the street from the Wilsons, realized her neighbors' house was on fire and alerted Marilyn, who was standing at her door.

"The lady was standing at the door, and kept seeing stuff go by like smoke, and she thought it was something else. That's when I yelled 'Fire'!," said Hill.

Wilson alerted her husband and they escaped the burning building uninjured.

"Thank you good Lord for looking over," said Wilson.

As a thick cloud of smoke filled the neighborhood near Mendenhall, Marilyn and Jim looked on in disbelief, reflecting on the things they lost in the fire.

"My husband is a professional photographer so he has beautiful scenic portraits," said Marilyn.

"Cameras..Wow, I got all kinds of cameras, too," added Jim.

Despite losing the place they called home for 52 years, the Wilson's remain thankful for their lives, and thankful for Raven Hill, whom neighbors are calling a hero.

"I kind of like it, but then, I don't want to flaunt it," said Hill.

Fire Investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the fire.

Neighbors have offered to give the Wilsons a place to stay while they figure out what they will do next.
