Motorists should expect delays on Mississippi River Bridges

Motorists traveling across Mississippi River bridges between Memphis and Arkansas should expect overnight delays Monday and Tuesday.

The Interstate 40 Hernando Desoto Bridge and the Interstate 55 Bridge will shut down for 30 minute intervals between 8pm and 5am on April 28-29.

The closings will allow crews to install new overhead message boards, part of the Tennessee Department of Transportation's SmartWay system in Memphis.

The $3 million SmartWay project, expected to be completed by October, will feature a network of overhead message boards, traffic cameras, a city-wide highway advisory radio system, and a new Traffic Management Center.

Safety for workers and drivers is TDOT's main concern during the shut-down. Said Chief Engineer Paul Degges, "During these lane closures we urge motorists to drive safely and be alert."
