Gov. to address joint legislative assembly on budget cuts

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Phil Bredesen has asked lawmakers to convene in a joint session to hear his explanation of budget cuts that have become necessary due to lower than expected revenue.

Bredesen, a Democrat, had originally asked to present the revised budget proposals early next week. But House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh says that the address likely won't be scheduled until early the following week.

Analysts have estimated that more than $500 million may have to be cut out of the state spending plan for the budget year that begins on July 1.

The State Funding Board was scheduled to set final revenue projections on Thursday.
