Mother, son swept up in aftermath of Thursday robbery

A man and his mother found themselves caught up in the middle of a police chase Thursday, as Memphis Police pursued a duo of carjacking suspects.

Carl Defell was running an errand with his mother, Donna, when he saw two men sprinting away from an empty car moving down Dunn Street.

"I asked my some to get out of the car, because he was driving, and get in the car and move the car out of the way, so we could continue on," Donna said.

Unwilling to disobey his mother, Carl got into the car, a red Chrysler Sebring, to stop it.  Within seconds, police swarmed the car, which Carl soon learned had just been used as a getaway vehicle during a robbery at the Prescott Place Apartments.

"The whole police precinct pulled up, and they were pulling out guns and stuff," he said.

Officers cleared Carl Defell, and quickly tracked down the two robbery suspects.

With the Prescott Place robbery solved, investigators soon realized they'd cracked another case: a day old carjacking.  The Sebring had been stolen Wednesday night during a carjacking on Raines Road.

That carjacking case is still an open investigation.  Police are trying to determined if the two men arrested they arrested Thursday were involved in the carjacking, or if they were simply in possession of the car.

Meanwhile, the Defells were happy to be safe, and excited to tell their story of a Thursday afternoon turned upside-down.

"When you do right things, right things'll come back to you," Donna said.
