John Ford hearing postponed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - It looks like federal marshals ran into some travel problems in fetching former state Sen. John Ford from a prison in Louisiana for a court hearing in Nashville.

The hearing was set for Tuesday, but a federal judge ordered it postponed Friday until June 9.

Ford, a Memphis Democrat, is scheduled for trial late next month on charges he failed to report $800,000 in consulting payments from state contractors.

He began serving an unrelated 5½-year bribery sentence on April 28 at a federal prison near Alexandria, La.

In asking for a hearing delay, prosecutors said a customary "airlift" provided by U.S. marshals was not available to get Ford to Nashville on schedule.
