Bill would require all DUI offenders to serve 48 hours

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Legislation that would require all individuals convicted of drunken driving to serve at least 48 hours in jail passed the House.

The measure sponsored by Rep. Harry Brooks, a Knoxville Republican, was approved 96-1. The companion bill was unanimously approved in the Senate last month.

Currently, DUI offenders less than 21 years of age must serve at least 48 hours in jail. The minimum period of incarceration for DUI offenders who are 21 years of age or older is 24 hours.

This bill would require all DUI offenders, regardless of age, to serve at least 48 hours in jail.       The legislation now goes back to the Senate to work out
