Fayette schools transferring students for racial balance

SOMERVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Fayette County school board has approved transferring several hundred students to different schools next year to meet a federal desegregation order.

The plan to adjust the schools' racial balance must be approved by the Justice Department.       About 400 students would be transferred from Oakland Elementary, which is 70 percent white, to Southwest Elementary, which is 98 percent black.

Transfers also would move sixth-grade students attending several Fayette County elementary schools to two junior high schools.
