4 charged in vehicle burglary of Memphis police director

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Four people have been charged with breaking into a truck belonging to Memphis police director Larry Godwin.

His 20-year-old daughter was driving the truck last month when the window was smashed and her purse stolen. Another car parked nearby was also burglarized and police were able to lift fingerprints from the two vehicles.

Three of the suspects were being held in the Shelby County Jail on Thursday while the fourth was free on bond.

Godwin declined to comment on the case, but other Memphis police officials said they treated the director's case the same as the other 3,000 reported vehicle break-ins they've had this year.

The only difference is a policy that requires a supervisor on the scene when a public official is a crime victim.
