Memphis-based group wants to put 100-bed hospital in Olive Branch

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) - Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare has notified the Mississippi Department of Health that it wants to build a 100-bed hospital in Olive Branch.

The CEO of the nonprofit hospital group based in Memphis, Gary Shorb, said DeSoto County is growing quickly and needs medical facilities. Shorb said a more detailed application is being prepared.

A spokesman for the Mississippi State Department of Health, Matt Staggs, said the proposal calls for the hospital to be near the intersection of U.S. 78 and Bethel Road.

The Department of Health is required to approve a certificate of need before such projects can move forward.

Mississippi officials have turned down Methodist's plan for a DeSoto hospital more than once before. The 2008 Legislature did not consider a bill that would have directed the Health Department to allow a Memphis hospital to locate a medical facility in DeSoto County.
