Lakeland man killed in crash

A Lakeland man was killed Saturday evening when he drove his pick-up truck on an unopened stretch of Highway 385 in East Shelby County.

37-year-old David Steele and his 13-year-old daughter were riding in a truck when Steele drove around a barricade to go south on the highway, which is still under construction.

The truck traveled on pavement for a short time and then continued on gravel for about one quarter of a mile. The road then turned to concrete and the truck went out of control, hitting a guard rail on the bridge and rolling over several times.

Steele was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck. He died at the crash site.

Steele's daughter, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center with only slight injuries.

Deputies say speed was a factor in the crash, but there was no evidence that alcohol was involved.
