Tornado reported in Stuttgart, storms bring hail, rain

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - A tornado damaged buildings and pulled down trees Saturday night on the south side of Stuttgart as storms that spurred numerous tornado warnings moved across the state.

The National Weather Service said trees were down across a wide area of the southeast Arkansas city and that an elderly woman was reported trapped in her home.

Stuttgart is known for its duck hunting and rice production.

Funnel clouds were reported in a number of areas, including one in the Harrison area.

In White County, the weather service said there was wind damage in Searcy, where trees were down in a couple of places.

A large area of warm, moist air moved over Arkansas as a cold front approached from the west. Tornado warnings were in force simultaneously from the state's far northwest to the Delta in the southeast.

Hail of up to an 1 inch in diameter fell in a number of counties across the state.

Arkansas has been beset by hazardous weather this year. Tornadoes killed 13 people on Feb. 5 and another seven were killed in an outbreak on May 2. In between was freezing weather and river flooding that damaged residences has slowed farmers in their planting.
