Opa! Memphis Greek Festival celebrates 50 years

This weekend marked the 50th anniversary of the Memphis Greek Festival.

The community celebration takes place each spring at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.

The cultural festival began 50 years ago as a simple pastry bazaar. Now it serves as the church's largest fundraiser.

A percentage of this year's admission proceeds will also benefit Youth Villages and Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.

"Just enjoy the people, enjoy the food, that's what its all about -- the sweets, the food, the dancing," said festival chairman Nick Kourvelas.

People traveled from as far away as Brighton and Nashville to enjoy the weekend's festivities.

Festival-goers enjoyed Greek delicacies, live music, a full marketplace -- and plenty of opportunities to say "opa!"
