Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton gave his speech this week about the current state of Memphis City Schools, detailing many of the problems facing the system.

If you believe in the power of leadership like I do, you would have to say that the number one problem facing the school system at this moment is that it has no permanent leader.

Dr. Herenton reemphasized several times during his speech that he is not now a candidate to be the new superintendent.

On the issue of bringing in a new leader from outside the district, the mayor responded with the words "God help us." He also seemed lukewarm to the idea of promoting someone from within the current administration.

The most hopeful note of Dr. Herenton’s speech was his promise to help the board and whoever is chosen to be the new superintendent. He could begin that process now by either passionately joining the search for a new superintendent or getting out of the way.

That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
