Police dog foils burglary attempt

A police dog foiled a burglary attempt at Treadwell High School on North Highland just after midnight Thursday.

Investigators say an 18-year-old male broke into the school and attempted to steal electronic equipment.

The police dog stopped him in a hallway before he could escape with the stolen items. The teen now faces burgary charges.

Memphis Police Lt. Col. Mark McClain says that K-9 officers play a vital role in the police force.

"It helps our officers. Because when they go into an unknown environment they don't know where the burglar is. These dogs pick up a scent," said McClain.

Woody, the dog that captured the suspect, is set to retire from the force next week.
