Senate approves bill to allow layoffs of 150 DCS employees

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The state Senate has approved a bill to give the administration special power to lay off Department of Children's Services employees without affecting case workers.

The Senate voted 24-3 to pass the bill sponsored by Senate Democratic Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis.

Gov. Phil Bredesen has asked for exemptions to state civil service requirements as a result of a rule change that cut $73 million in federal fund money from the department's funding.

The governor has targeted layoffs of 150 administrative workers in the department as a way to protect more junior case workers from cuts. The special exemptions would expire later this year.

The companion bill is awaiting consideration in a House subcommittee.
