Fight over wallet leads to stabbing

Police say a fight over a wallet led to the stabbing Friday afternoon on Azalia Avenue.

A robber with a knife somehow made his way into a home on Azalia near Saxon. He demanded money from a man inside. The suspect then got his hands on the man's wallet and they began to fight over it. The robber then stabbed the man at least twice in the neck and back area before running from the house.

Jesse Sherrod shook his head in disbelief to hear what happened on his block. He is the captain for the Neighborhood Watch. Sherrod said he has seen some violence in the neighborhood.

"I've seen people shot and killed, but random," Sherrod said.

The home invasion happened just a stone's throw from Stafford Elementary.  The principal came to the crime scene to see if he needed to put his school on lockdown. Police informed him he did not.

Sherrod said the Neighborhood Watch will need to step up its efforts.

"Monitor the people and get our people aware of what's happening," Sherrod said.

Though police say crime is down citywide, there have been eight robberies within a one mile radius of Azalia and Saxon in the last month.

Police are on the hunt for the knife-wielding robber.

At the time this story was posted, the victim was listed in critical condition.
