Rape suspect could be responsible for other crimes - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

Rape suspect could be responsible for other crimes

A gate failed to keep trouble out of the Madison at Cypress Lakes apartments near Quince and Kirby Thursday.

"That's scary," said tenant Annette Bates.

A woman was sexually assaulted during a home invasion in the middle of the day.

"It's just sad, you know?" said Bates.  "You don't know what to think, you know?" she added.

Chopper 5 was over the scene shortly after Memphis Police began their investigation.

"The victim heard a knock at the door, answered the door, and the suspect was at the door and forced his way in," Det. Monique Martin told us.

Now, police they say the suspect may be responsible for a number of other crimes.  A surveillance camera snapped two photos of the possible culprit while he used an ATM card stolen from a women during a similar home invasion earlier in the week.  It happened at an apartment complex near Kirby and Knight-Arnold.  Yet another crime occurred inside a gated complex off Ridgeway.  Neither is far from where the same suspect may have struck again.

"We definitely need the information to go out to people who live in this complex to be on the lookout," said Det. Martin.

Meantime, any sense of security provided by gates is gone.

"Even though it's gated, they can still slide through the gate," said one tenant.  "And they can find a way to get through the gates," she added.

Police hope to catch the suspect before he slips by them again.

Call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH if you know anything about these recent home invasions.
