MCS communications chief steps down

Memphis City Schools communications chief Rita Cooper has resigned.

Cooper, who heads the district's communications, marketing and development department, will step down at the end of June. Cooper has served as Memphis City Schools lead spokesperson since April of 2006.

"I have been blessed to have worked with such incredibly devoted colleagues, media and community members and will miss collaborating and toiling alongside each one of them in this rewarding work," said Cooper.

Cooper has accepted a position as a public relations director for California-based Warner Bros. She worked in publicity for Warner Bros prior to her time at MCS.

"Rita is a hard-working, respected leader in Memphis City Schools and a one-of-a-kind talent who will be difficult to replace," said interim Superintendent Dan Ward, also stepping down this summer.

The district has appointed communications and marketing coordinator Staci Franklin to serve as interim communications chief starting in July.
