Woman convicted of killing cop-boyfriend returns to jail

The Mid-South woman convicted of shooting a Memphis police officer is back in jail after violating her probation.

Monique Johnson was convicted of shooting Officer Tony Hayes to death.  Investigators said Johnson enlisted the aid of her 16-year-old son to help move Hayes' body.

Wednesday, Tony Hayes' mother, Ethel, said she was glad to hear the justice system - the system she feels failed her - put her son's killer back behind bars.

"I feel like she should have stayed when she was there," she said.

Johnson testified she was afraid of her boyfriend before she shot him six times.
"She killed him saying it's self defense. It's not. Tony would never do anything to anybody," Hayes said.

A jury convicted her of a reduced charge of reckless homicide.

"We knew it wasn't true because we know Tony," Ethel Hayes said. "People who didn't know him would believe what she says, but we know better. "

Tuesday, two months into Johnson's probation, a judge ordered her to go back to jail for violating her probation.  Johnson failed to follow a court order to obtain employement and seek counciling withing 60 days of her probation.

"God is going to take care of her," Hayes said. "She knows she did it, and will have to give an account of what she did. She's got to...can't get away with it."

Hayes said there's not a day that goes by when she doesn't think of her son.

"God is in control of whatever happens," she said. "We just pray each day. and ask the Lord to help us deal with it."

A judge will decide on Johnson's sentence on June 26.
