New ad campaign aims to keep illegal guns off the street

'Don't Lie For The Other Guy' is a new ad campaign aimed at keeping illegally purchased guns out of the community.

Using billboards going up around Memphis, organizers are warning people about the 10-year prison sentence associated with buying a gun for a convicted felon, or others not authorized.

In addition to the ATF and other investigators at Wednesday's kickoff, Memphian Stevie Moore was there to show support.  In 2003, Moore's son was shot and killed by a man with an AK-47 rifle.

Wednesday, Moore said the weapon used to kill his son was bought illegally and he thinks the new program will be a strong deterrent.

"The threat of incarnation and the threat of a big fine, too. Because you know economics is everything. So if you think its going to hit your pocket book and take your freedom away, I think combined with that, I think it's a great deterrent," Moore said.

In addition raising awareness of the penalties for buying guns illegally, the campaign also warns dealers who sell guns.

Organizers will soon begin airing TV commercials that highlights their message.
