Subcontractor ignites gas main in Cordova

Firefighters with Memphis and Shelby County battled a gas main fire Thursday afternoon near Mirror Lake Lane and Spinnaker Lane in Cordova's Mirror Lake subdivision.

The gas main ignited around 3:15pm when it was struck by a subcontractor working for AT&T. Video from Chopper 5 taken a short time after the fire started showed flames rising from a hole in the front yard of the home the main was located under.

MLGW crews could not immediately extinguish the blaze by shutting of gas valves because of a danger of gas build-up in appliances in nearby homes.

As the fire burned, residents from two homes near it were evacuated.  Other residents, not wanting to take any chances, left their homes as well.

"I knew that it didn't look real dangerous, but I certainty didn't want to hang around and wait," resident Judy Markham said.

The blaze was extinguished around 4:45pm, and residents were allowed to return home a short time later.
