Chase over stolen truck ends in officer-involved shooting

A police chase over a stolen truck Saturday ended in an officer-involved shooting at the corner of Elliston and Elvis Presley Blvd. in South Memphis.

The chase started when a man stole a Chevrolet pickup from the Walgreen's parking lot at Bellevue and McLemore around noon. About two hours after the officer took the stolen vehicle report, he spotted the truck and pulled the driver over.

According to police, the driver exited the truck, started to fight with the officer, and grabbed his pistol. The officer managed to fire one shot. Then another officer with him stepped in.

"I saw the suspect with his hands on the pistol. Another officer fired several shots, striking the defendant," said Lt. Col. Ray Douglas with Memphis police.

The wounded suspect got back into the truck and drove a little ways down the road before pulling over. Paramedics transported him to The Med in critical condition.

The officer, a 24-year veteran, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital in non-critical condition.

As is standard procedure, the two officers involved in the shooting are on temporary leave while police investigate the incident.

No charges have been filed.
