South Memphis shooting leaves teen dead, mother in critical condition

Memphis police are investigating a double shooting that left a young man dead and sent his mother to The Med in critical condition.

The incident happened around 4:00 this afternoon at Chadwick Circle in South Memphis.

Police say the shooter, now in custody, is the mother's boyfriend.

"Yesterday one of the homeowners put her boyfriend out, today he came back and retaliated with a weapon," said Lt. Col. Ray Douglas.

Carolyn Rice, the suspect's sister, said she just saw her brother and his girlfriend Saturday, and everything seemed normal.

Rice thinks her brother was provoked in the shooting.

"I was just informed that the female that was shot called my parents home earlier today and asked for my brother to come to her home. My brother refused to come, she again sent her son to my parents home to ask my brother to come to her home," said Rice.

Neighbor Eric Burrela said he used to play basketball with the woman's son, who was shot dead.

"I heard the gunshots, didn't think it would be like that," said Burrela.

Neighborhood children also heard the shots that took the young man's life.

"Went over shot his momma, laid out on the floor. Shot the boy in the back, he died," said young neighbor Corey Groves.

No charges have been filed yet in the double shooting.
