Tuesday at Stanford St. Jude Championship Brings an Exemption and a Withdrawal

Memphian Casey Whittenberg has accepted a Sponsors Exemption to play in the Stanford St. Jude Championship..

He's also going to play in Next Weeks' U.S. Open after surviving a 36-hole qualifying sectional and a 9-man playoff at Colonial Country Club..

But, All Eyes will be on the TPC at Southwind for the rest of this week.

Tiger Woods might not be here but his coach Hank Haney is.

While Woods recovers from knee surgery, Haney kick started Tuesday with some putting lessons for about 50 kids from the local First Tee Program.

The big news of the day is Ernie Els. First he was in then he was out...then he back in again...now he's out for good citing illness. But the field was strong before him and should be just fine.

  Tournament Director Phil Cannon.

"Unfortunately Ernie had to withdraw but that still leaves us with defending Master's winner Trevor Immelman, British Open winner Padraig Harrington and reigning Players Champion Sergio Garcia. "

Don't forget the 10th ranked player in the world Vijay Singh.

He was testing out some new technology that measures your swing tempo through sound wave in headphones...it'll probably be the next big fad.

Multiple winner David Toms always puts on a good show here in Memphis....

How about two-time US Open champ Retief Goosen. The South African returns for the second time after giving Memphis a try for the first time last year.

Goosen says:

<"It''s a great tune up for the US Open. The fairways are narrow so you have to drive it straight. It's a good week to be here. "

Memphian Shaun Micheel hasn't played particularly well since winning the PGA Championship.

Lately he's been suffering from a should injury.

But he wants to tough it out one last time in front of his family and friends.

Micheel says he's having shoulder surgery Tuesday that will put him out of action for several months.

First round action begins Thursday bright and early at 7am, Micheel teeing off #10 at 12:45 along with David Toms.

The Stanford St. Jude Championship Pro-Am is Wednesday with Soccer stars Mia Hamm and Michael Owen, plus Reigning NASCAR Rookie of the Year Juan Pablo Montoya, taking part.
