Group of male suspects wanted in daytime carjacking

Shelby County deputies are searching for 4-6 armed male suspects who carjacked a man in broad daylight Tuesday in Southeast Shelby County.

According to investigators, the victim, known in the neighborhood as "Fat Daddy", was visiting a friend when the gang of young men approached him in the driveway.

"Pulled a pistol on him and then demanded his money, cell phone, and then took his car," said Sgt. Ray Sides of Shelby Co. Sheriff's Office.

Detectives say the number of carjackings increase this time of year as temperatures rise.

"I don't know if it's school, and people are out of school, and youngins are out doing things. The heat gets 'em out," said Sides. "I don't know exactly what it is, but you know they go up. They go up."

Sides says this victim did the right thing by giving the robbers what they wanted.

"You don't want a confrontation, cause if you do, there could be some serious trouble," Sides said.

Neighbor Stacy Simmons offered his advice to young people tempted by crime.

"Cut some grass or something if they need some money dawg, you know what I'm saying?" said Simmons. "Do it the easy way instead of the illegal way and get caught."

Investigators are looking for a red 1997 Trans Am. If you have any information, call Crimestoppers at 901-528-CASH.
