Boaters rescued after canoes capsize

Four people were rescued after two canoes capsized in separate incidents Wednesday morning on the Mississippi River in Lauderdale County.

Officials said just after 10am Wednesday, the U.S. Coast Guard received a call from a tow boat saying that an overturned canoe was floating down the Mississippi in Lauderdale County.  As the operator of the tow boat made the call, a second canoe capsized.

The tow boat’s crew launched a rescue boat and pulled the two people from the second canoe out of the water.  The rescued canoeists reported that two people from the first canoe were missing.

Rescue crews with the U.S. Coast Guard, along with the Lauderdale Sheriff’s Department and others participated in the search for the missing canoeists.

Around 1:00pm, the missing canoeists were found in good condition.  They were taken to a hospital in Osceola, Arkansas to be checked out.
