13-year-old high school graduate prepares for college

Graduate and Covington resident Graham Charles Elwood, who was just recognized as co-valedictorian of his high school class, was only 13-years-old when he received his diploma.

"Its a relief to finally be done with everything," Elwood said Wednesday.

Graham just graduated from Gateway Christian Schools in Memphis.  By working at his own pace and taking over 100 tests, he completed five grades in just six months.

"I don't really have time to stop and think. I just keep on moving onto the next thing," he said.

The modern day Renaissance man has done a little of everything, from singing and dancing at Carnegie Hall, to winning an international acting award.

"He amazes people with what he knows," said Graham's mother, Shelby Elwood-Rainey. "I wonder if he amazes himself sometimes because he know a little of everything."

His mother has trouble keeping up with him.

"I tell people that he's like walking a great dane puppy. I just hold onto the leash as hard as I can," she said.

"She's supporting, I'm pulling," said Graham.

Now, Graham and his mother spend a lot of time looking at college courses.  Graham plans to enroll in college this fall.

"It's almost gonna be a relief to slow down into the classroom again," he said.

A relief because young Graham has spent the past few weeks doing normal kid things, like playing his guitar and riding his bike.

"I still feel like a kid," he said.

A kid with an IQ of over 170, who is ready to tackle the college world.

"I hope they're gonna accept me as another student," he said.

Graham plans to attend Southwest Tennessee Community college in the Fall. After finishing college, he plans to attend law school and specialize in international law.

You can read more of Graham's story in this Friday's edition of The Leader in Covington.
