West Tennessee Head Start office settles lawsuit whistle blower

UNION CITY, Tenn. (AP) - An office that oversees Head Start programs in 13 West Tennessee counties has settled a lawsuit with a fired former maintenance worker.

The Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Council, which runs the Head Start program, agreed to pay James Churchwell nearly $290,000.

Lake County Mayor Macie Roberson, who is also the council's chairman, wrote a letter of apology to Churchwell.

Churchwell and two other employees were fired last year by office director Pamela Castleman after they alleged she had used her position to benefit herself and her relatives. Castleman was fired earlier this year.

The other two fired employees were not part of the lawsuit.
