Police and robbers exchange gunfire in Mapco robbery

Two robbery suspects are in custody after exchanging gunfire with police following a hold-up at a Midtown Mapco.

The armed men robbed the Mapco at the corner of Central and Cooper around 7:00 Sunday morning. Police chased the robbers down and cornered them in the backyard of a home on Higbee street, where the suspects and officers exchanged gunfire.

No one was shot, and minutes later the suspects were arrested.

Neighbors praised officers for their quick work.

"I just happened to be walking by my front window, and I looked out...I saw more police on this street than I had every seen in 30 years of living here," said neighbor John McKinnon.

The suspects' names have not been released. Police are still investigating.
