Expert offers tips on improving fuel mileage

As fuel flirts with the $4 per gallong mark, experts say there are easy ways to improve your gas mileage.

In search of advice, we brought our questions to the same place that services the Action News 5 fleet.  Monday, Chris Walker of Barton's Auto Repair said motorists should exercise what he calls "driving smart."

"Driving smart is not going to cost you any money, and that will give you your best benefit," he said.

Walker said the benefits result from good driving habits.  First and foremost, maintaining proper tire pressure is one of the best ways to save gas, Walker said.

Also important is driving at a steady, average pace.  Rapid acceleration or excessive braking can cut down on your mileage.

Finally, Walker said, follow your car's handbook.

"The vehicle manufacturer recommends maintenance for spark plugs, tune-up, air filter replacement," he said. "All that's very important for the efficiency of an engine."

In addition to Walker's advice, the federal government has posted tips on improving fuel economy in your automobile.  Among the advice given:

  • Observe the speed limit
  • Eliminate excess wait in your automobile
  • Use cruise control
  • Avoid excess idling

You can search for the lowest gas prices in town by using the Gas Tracker.
