Church hit by thieves 3 times in a week

In the shadow of the massive Temple of Deliverance sits this much smaller church.  It's where faith is in focus like never before.

"Tough faith for tough times," said Pastor George Robinson.

Robinson is talking about the three break-ins his church has suffered in just the last week.

"Just not a lot of virtue among thieves," said Robinson.

First, they pried open the front security door with a crow bar and walked right in.

"Came down this aisle and got a Roland keyboard from on top of another keyboard," said Robinson.

Heavy metal could not protect an outside air conditioner either.  Crooks destroyed it last Wednesday.

"Got about $35 worth of copper and caused about $2000 worth of damage," said Robinson.

The church keeps two vans parked in front of a storage building to protect it from thieves.  But the hopped on the hood of one Sunday night and ripped open the aluminum door.

"All of our excess storage is here because the church is so small," said Robinson.

Pastor Robinson has tried to make it more difficult for crooks to get in.  The church is spending money protecting itself from a neighborhood Robinson would rather be helping.

"It's the center of one of the worst zip codes in Memphis according to the police department," he said.

For now, he has no plans to walk away.

"The criminal element certainly won't drive us from it," said Robinson.

He and his flock will just hope and pray things improve.

Pastor Robinson wants to join together with other church leaders wanting to fight crime.  He's holding a meeting this Saturday at 3:00pm at the church on South 4th Street.  Call 901-948-0940 for more information.
