Officials search for up to three bears spotted in Tunica County

TUNICA COUNTY, MS (WMC-TV) - Officials continued their search Friday for up to three bears spotted walking around a neighborhood off Highway 61 near Beatline Road in Tunica County.

Reports surfaced earlier this week about the possibility of three bears - a mother and two cubs - one of which may have become trapped for a time in someone's yard.  Investigators believe the bear or bears eventually ran off into a nearby woods.

Neighborhood resident Jarrett Walton said he was able to snap some pictures of a bear while he was driving earlier this week. The situation became frightening, Walton said, when he started having trouble with his truck.

"When I got close to him, I mashed by breaks," Walton said. "My truck just cut off, and I couldn't start it back up, and I was looking at the bear, and I was like...he was looking at me, I was looking at him, and he was like, 'Your truck's off, buddy.'"

Officials said the bear Walton referred to has black fur, and is around five feet tall.

Thursday, Tunica County officials used helicopter-mounted thermal imaging cameras to try to locate the bear.

The search was called off Friday, with officials saying they would wait for additional tips from residents as to the bear's possible location.
