School secretary suspected of theft

A Memphis City Schools secretary is under investigation on suspicion she stole thousands of dollars.

Inside the walls of Frayser High School, the school's financial secretary may have pocketed school money.

A letter from a Memphis City Schools auditor to Interim Superintendent Dan Ward says the missing money was discovered when financial secretary Raynell Williams reported the money was stolen from the school.

The auditor said the theft story was not credible.  Instead, auditors said, they discovered instances where Williams' bank deposits didn't match her receipts.

Auditors found a total of $9,000 missing.

Tuesday, we went to Williams' address looking for answers, but the home was vacant.  Neighbors said when Williams and her husband moved out, they left many items behind.

"They moved out," one neighbor said. "Never said anything about why they moved."

Memphis City Schools did not notify the District Attorney's office about the missing money, but did notify the State Comptroller's Office.  A representative there said an investigation was forthcoming.
