Juan Carlos Navarro leaves Griz for F.C. Barcelona

Juan Carlos Navarro has decided to return home and play for F.C. Barcelona after one season with the Memphis Grizzlies.

In a statement, General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace said, "Juan Carlos Navarro has decided to rejoin his former team, F.C. Barcelona. As of late Tuesday, Juan Carlos' intention was to test the NBA free agent waters come July. However, on Wednesday he received the proverbial offer he could not refuse from his old team. We plan on extending a qualifying offer to Juan Carlos so that the Grizzlies retain the right to match any future offer if he ever decides to return to the NBA."

Navarro averaged 10.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists during his first year with the Grizzlies and was named to the NBA all-rookie second team in May.

Navarro made 156 3-pointers last season with the Grizzlies, two short of equaling the NBA record for a rookie.

"Juan Carlos made a positive contribution to the team and we wish him and his family all the best in his return to his homeland," Wallace said.

Navarro previously played for  Barcelona's youth team in 1992, playing five seasons with the first team.

Navarro, who helped Spain win the 2006 World Championship,  is also on the national squad for the Beijing Olympics in August.
