Memphis woman charged with stabbing two young sons

A Memphis woman has been charged with stabbing her two young children, officials said Friday.

Monica Spann was charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse/neglect in the stabbing of her sons, ages 3 and 11 months.

According to Memphis Police Major Joe Scott, police were dispatched to a home in the 900 block of Minnehaha on June 9 on a wounding call. When they arrived, the officers found Spann and her two young children suffering from serious stab wounds.

Investigators said Spann and her children were the only ones home at the time. Their father, Rob Joyner, was out of town.

The two children were taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center, where they remain in serious and stable condition.

Investigators later determined Spann's wounds were self inflicted.  According to a police affidavit, when investigators asked Spann what happened, she said, "I did it."

When asked why, she replied, "I didn't want her to have them."

According to the affidavit, officers also found a suicide note on the kitchen counter at the home on Minnehaha.
