Bredesen signs bill seeking to improve energy efficiency

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Gov. Phil Bredesen has signed a bill requiring the use of lottery reserve funds to help make Tennessee schools more energy efficient.

The measure uses $100 million of the state's nearly $460 million in lottery reserves to make the state's K-12 schools more energy efficient. It also creates a council to award grants or loans for improvements such as better lighting or insulation.

Opponents of the bill had expressed concern that funds won't be evenly distributed, which could hurt schools in rural areas.
