Reports: Marc Gasol says he will play in the NBA next season

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Spanish international Marc Gasol will play in the NBA next season, news reports said Monday.

Gasol, whose registration is held by the Memphis Grizzlies, has spent the past two years with Spain's Akasvayu Girona.

"Now I've got a good opportunity and I'll give it a try. I'm excited about it," the 23-year-old center was quoted as saying by the Europa Press news agency. "In the United States basketball is different, it gets played differently. The best centers are there, there's another rhythm of play and another rhythm of life."

Gasol, who recently attracted interest from Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, reportedly said he didn't discount playing for another NBA team if the Grizzlies decided to trade him.

Gasol, who played high school basketball for the Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis and was the 48th overall pick in the 2007 Draft, is the younger brother of Los Angeles Lakers' Pau Gasol, who began his NBA career with the Grizzlies.

Marc Gasol's draft rights were traded by the Lakers to the Grizzlies in February as part of a deal for his brother.

Gasol, who will be the ninth Spaniard to play in the NBA, helped Spain win its first World Championship in 2006.

Last week, Gasol's international teammate, Juan Carlos Navarro, left Memphis for FC Barcelona.
