City pools reopen with new rules

After sitting empty for a month, Memphis City Pools will reopen Wednesday, but there are changes you should be aware of before you or your children jump into the water.

The pools were closed after two teens drowned in two separate pools on Opening Day in late May.

Wednesday, officials said all pool patrons - both children and adults - will be required to register and have an ID card to enter a pool.

City of Memphis CAO Keith McGee said as part of the process, life guards are also being retrained.

"We are already ahead of the standards in place, and are confident with the trained professionals we have in these positions.

Registration for city pools will run through the end of July.

A complete rundown of pool registration requirements is below:

MEMPHIS, TN (July 1, 2008) – The City of Memphis, Division of Park Services will hold registration for pool photo ID cards through the end of July. Everyone attending a City of Memphis Aquatic Facility during “free swim” hours MUST have a Park Services issued Pool Photo ID Card.

  • All patrons will be required to register and receive a pool ID card.  A parent or guardian MUST accompany and register their children, age 17 and under. Both the child and the parent or guardian must be present.
  • Adults will be required to accompany all children 12 and under or less than 4’ tall in height inside the pool fence. This adult will be required to also have a pool ID card for admittance to the pool.

Pool hours have changed to give parents more options to attend with children:

  • 1:00 – 2:30 15 years and under & Accompanying Adults
  • 3:00 – 4:30 16 years and older
  • 5:00 – 7:00 All Ages

A swim test will be required for anyone wanting to swim in the deep end. Tests will be administered daily, as needed and once passed, the swimmer’s ID card will be marked. For the rest of the season, the swimmer may use the deep end without a re-test.

For Registration:

  • Minors (17 and under) must be accompanied by their parent or guardian and, for minors without a driver’s license, must bring their birth certificate or another form of identification with the minor’s birth date listed.
  • Adults (18 and older) will need to bring a drivers license or other picture identification.  Again, adults that will be accompanying children 12 and under to the pool this summer, will also be required to register and receive their own ID card.
  • Photo ID Cards will be issued at registration and no one is allowed to register someone that is not present.  This means a parent or guardian must have their child with them at registration. This also means that if you are going to have another adult take your child swimming this summer they also must be at registration to receive a pool ID card.

Registration times are as follows:

  • Thursday, June 26, 5:00pm – 9:00pm
  • Friday, June 27, 5:00pm – 9:00pm
  • Saturday, June 28, 10:00am – 5:00pm
  • Sunday, June 29, 10:00am – 5:00pm
  • Monday, June 30, 5:00pm – 9:00pm
  • Tuesday, July 1, 5:00pm – 9:00pm

Pool registration will take place at the following community centers. You may register at any of these locations and your ID card will be accepted at any City of Memphis pool.
