Man who previously shot himself steals neighbor's gun

DYERSBURG, Tenn. (AP) - A West Tennessee man who had previously shot himself is now charged with stealing a World War II-era rifle from a neighbor.

Newbern police said 35-year-old Jason Berry had been hired by a neighbor to mow the lawn and given a remote control to open the garage door and get the mower.

Authorities recovered the gun, which they said Berry sold to a Union City gun dealer for $150.

The rifle was the only item taken from the house.

In May, Berry was hospitalized for a gunshot wound.

He told police he was the victim of a drive-by shooting, but later admitted he shot himself in the hip with a pistol.

He was sent for a psychiatric evaluation in that incident.
