FedEx founder: uninterested in McCain VP slot

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith says he has no interest in becoming the running mate of presumed GOP presidential candidate John McCain.

Responding to questions from The Associated Press, Smith issued a statement Friday through the FedEx public relations office saying he intends to continuing running his Memphis-based company.

"Mr. Smith has no interest in pursuing political office under any circumstance," the statement said. "He is fully engaged in running FedEx and continues to enjoy the many challenges and opportunities of growing the business globally."

Smith has been involved in McCain's campaign and mentioned among a handful of business executives McCain might consider as a running mate.

McCain's campaign will not comment on his list of potential running mates.

Smith founded a small airline - Federal Express - that grew into FedEx Corp., now an international shipping giant.
