The Memphis Police Department is made up of many fine officers, and everyone would agree being a Memphis Police officer is one tough job. Of course, with a police force as big as the one in Memphis, there are inevitably going to be some bad apples from time to time, the same as in any other workforce.

Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin understands this and is not hesitant to point out his record of dealing with rogue cops. At least 40 officers have been fired or resigned since he took over four years ago.

This willingness to confront problems helps build up the community's confidence in its police force. That's important because there will be a day when that confidence is threatened as it was last week when we all saw the videotape of officer Bridges McRae beating Duanna Johnson.

For what it's worth, Director Godwin could have enhanced the department's credibility with the community even more, if he had been the one to first tell us about this incident instead of waiting for the incident to become public because someone leaked the videotape.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email
