Police investigate body found

Memphis police are investigating after a body was found Tuesday morning near a daycare center in the Whitebrook Plaza in Memphis.  Officials said the body, that of an adult male, was found just after 7:15 a.m.

Nearby resident Eugene Royal said he heard a gunshot early Tuesday morning.

"Yeah, that is unbelievable, that's for sure," Royal said.

Parents who stopped by to drop their children off at the nearby daycare said they were concerned about what happened.

"We're not going to take them here today," grandmother Sharon Brown said.

"I'm going to turn around (and) take them to the other center," said Kay Taylor, a mother whose children attend the center.

Parents also expressed concern about a vacant building near to both the daycare and the location where the body was found.  With its door wide open, it was easy Tuesday to look inside to see make-up and clothes.

"I was hoping they'd renovate it soon and put some more businesses in it," Taylor said.

People who work nearby said prostitution is common in the area.  In fact, condom wrappers lined the same parking lot as the daycare.

Investigators have identified the victim as Rodney Whitaker, but said her may have also used the last name "Edwards." They believed foul play was involved.

An official cause of death has not yet been released by the Shelby County Medical Examiner.

Memphis police are still working to identify any possible witnesses. If you have information that could aid police, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
