Residents on North Willet angered by messy yard

For residents along North Willett in Memphis, most yards are cut and manicured, but when you get to 420 Willett, neighbors say the story is different.

Libby Carroll said the tall grass at 420 Willet hasn't been touched in a long time.

"It's been months for that to get as tall as it has, and as healthy," she said. "It's gone through hot weather and rain.  Yeah, it's been awhile."

Out of frustration over the mess, someone put a huge sign in the front yard at 420 Willet which reads, "Yard of the Month."  Carroll said the sign's purpose seems to be to draw attention to the fact that something needs to be done.

"I think it was a joke, and maybe shows that someone's pretty fed up," she said.

Fed up, neighbors say, because the home has been vacant for years, and no one has taken responsibility for cleaning up around it.

"I know its in foreclosure, and I believe its with the bank," Caroll said.

Neighbors say a complaint has been filed with a city department set up to force homeowners to clean up their property, and right now they're waiting on the city to act.  Meanwhile the question of who put up the sign is a mystery.

"That's not a 'Yard of the Month; as we know a 'Yard of the Month' this area," Caroll said.

Late Wednesday, city officials said the homeowner was notified seven days ago to clean up the property, and plans are already underway for the city to cut the lawn and bill the homeowner.
