Torres pleads guilty in stepsister's death

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Marraina Torres has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from the death of her 2-year-old stepsister.

The 17-year-old Torres pleaded guilty Wednesday to manslaughter by culpable negligence after initially being charged with capital murder. She was not sentenced but faces 2-20 years in prison.
The child, Enna Baretto, died May 19 from injuries to her head and body. The girl was transferred from a Mississippi hospital to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis where she died. The Shelby County medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy and ruled the little girl's death a homicide.

The parents, Ramon and Janet Barreto, also have been charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence.

Police say the couple forced the little girl and eight other children to live in deplorable conditions in a New Albany, Mississippi, home while they ran a massive puppy mill that included more than 200 animals in their backyard. Inside the home, officers found feces next to food and cockroaches everywhere.

"I think their living conditions were atrocious," Union County Sheriff Tommy Wilhite said.

Six of the Barreto's children were under the age of 2.

Officials say the couple did not have paperwork from some of the adopted children.
