Memphis airport strives for calmer checkpoints

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - It's hard not to get stressed out at airport checkpoints as travelers rush to get through with the right luggage and personal identification.

But Memphis International Airport is trying to reduce that tension by changing officers' uniforms to a more-soothing color of blue and adding gentle background music.

Kevin McCarthy, the new federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration in West Tennessee, said his job is not just to make sure every passenger and bag are properly screened, but to make sure people enjoy traveling.

McCarthy said they will start training as soon as August on the new approach to checkpoints, which includes a more systematic way of chatting with passengers.
