From time to time over the next few months, I’ll use this opportunity to remind people about the transition to digital television.

As you’ve probably already heard, the method of transmitting television signals in this country is changing, and people have until February 17 of next year to get ready for the big switch.

This change was mandated by the federal government and it will provide television viewers with much better pictures and sound and more free, over-the-air channels to choose from.

Television stations - including WMC - have been broadcasting on the new standard for several years now. What changes on February 17 is that we will be required to turn off our older analog transmitters on that day.

The best part about the new television standard is that it enables us to provide broadcasts in high definition. I’m happy to say that this week Action News 5 was the first news operation in the Mid-South to begin offering our newscasts in high definition. We’re also committed to doing our part to help everyone understand the transition process and we have quite a bit of information about it available on our website.

That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
