BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - A newly formed minor league basketball

team in southern Kentucky has hired an NBA veteran as its first

coach.

The Kentucky Mavericks of the American Basketball Association

tapped former Memphis State star and longtime NBA player Vincent

Askew to lead the team.

Askew played for eight teams in nine NBA seasons. Askew's most

recent head coaching job was in the Continental Basketball

Association, where he coached the Albany Patroons.

The Mavericks are scheduled to begin play later this year.

The American Basketball Association has 43 franchises in the

United States, Canada, Mexico, Singapore and the Bahamas.
